A Clash Royale match isn't played the same way from start to finish. As the elixir rate changes, so does which plays are safe and which are risky. This guide explains what to focus on in each phase of the match.
At the start, neither player knows the other's deck. Your first card should reveal as little as possible about your deck and give your opponent no big chance to punish. General rules:
In the first part of the match, elixir refills slowly. This is the phase for gathering information and building an elixir advantage. Learn which win condition, spells and defensive cards your opponent plays. Defend every push as cheaply as you can and look for counterpush opportunities.
Taking some tower damage in this phase isn't a disaster. The match is usually decided in double elixir; focus on setting up a solid position rather than burning all your elixir to defend everything in single elixir.
In the last minute of regular time, elixir refills twice as fast. In this phase:
By the time double elixir starts, you should know your opponent's whole deck. Identify which of their cards is the best answer to your push and attack when that card isn't in their hand.
If the tower count is tied at the end of regular time, the match goes to overtime. Elixir keeps refilling fast in overtime and the first tower destroyed ends the match. That shifts your priorities:
When you're ahead (one tower up), you don't need risky attacks. Focus on defense, answer your opponent's pushes and let the clock work for you. When you're behind, you need to force your opponent into mistakes: pressure both lanes, send your strongest push when their elixir is low and save your spells to finish a tower.
