How to Build a Good Clash Royale Deck

Last updated: 2026-09-30

Putting the strongest cards together isn't enough to build a good Clash Royale deck. Winning decks are balanced: they have an answer for every situation. This guide covers the core rules experienced players check when they look at a deck, and the mistakes players make most often.

1. Pick one clear win condition

Your win condition is the card you rely on to damage the enemy tower: Hog Rider, Golem, Royal Giant, Miner, Balloon, Graveyard, X-Bow and so on. Most of these target buildings only, so they don't waste time fighting the troops in their way.

The rest of the deck exists to support that card and defend against your opponent. One main win condition is ideal; two can work. Three or more weakens your defense: your elixir keeps going into offense, and when your opponent attacks, you don't have the right card in hand.

2. Carry one small and one big spell

Small spells (The Log, Zap, Giant Snowball, Arrows, Barbarian Barrel) save you against cheap cards like Goblin Gang, Skeleton Army, Princess and Goblin Barrel. Without one, those cards will give you constant trouble.

Medium and big spells (Fireball, Poison, Lightning, Rocket, Earthquake) take out support cards like Musketeer and Wizard and finish towers late in the game. Two spells is ideal for most decks; more than three leaves you short on troops.

3. Have at least three cards that hit air

Air cards like Balloon, Lava Hound, Minion Horde and Baby Dragon can only be stopped by cards that target air. If fewer than two of your cards can hit air, you'll be helpless against an air-heavy opponent. Musketeer, Archers, Electro Wizard, Hunter, Mega Minion, Bats and Tesla are all examples of air-targeting cards.

4. Add splash damage and a tank killer

Splash damage cards (Valkyrie, Baby Dragon, Wizard, Bowler, Executioner) wipe out swarms in one go. Having at least one makes your opponent's cheap swarm cards worthless.

Tank killers (Mini P.E.K.K.A, P.E.K.K.A, Inferno Tower, Inferno Dragon, Hunter, Lumberjack) stop big tanks like Golem, Giant and Royal Giant. Without one, your opponent's tank will walk all the way to your tower.

5. Match your average elixir to your play style

A deck's average elixir cost shapes how it plays:

If your average elixir is too high, you'll struggle to answer fast attacks. Having at least two cards that cost 2 elixir or less lets you cycle quickly when you need to.

6. Choose cards that complement each other

Some cards are far stronger together. Night Witch behind Golem, Miner with Poison, Hog Rider with Earthquake, Balloon with Lumberjack and X-Bow with Tesla are well-known examples. When you add a card, ask yourself: "Does this card support my win condition, or is it here just because it's strong?"

7. Don't ignore card levels

The best deck on paper can be the worst deck if your cards are under-leveled. Every level makes a card noticeably stronger, and a card a few levels below your opponent's won't do the job you expect. Your win condition's level matters most: if the card that reaches the tower is weak, dealing damage becomes very hard. Build around your highest-level cards.
