Clash Royale Defense and Card Placement Guide

Last updated: 2026-09-30

In Clash Royale, the same card can win you the match or go to waste depending on where you place it. A tile or two decides whether an enemy troop gets shot by one tower or two. This guide covers the core rules of card placement on defense.

Pull troops to the middle

If an enemy troop is only in range of one tower, only that tower shoots it. Pull the troop toward the center of the arena and both Princess Towers, and sometimes the King Tower, shoot it together. That's why you usually don't place defensive cards directly in front of a troop, but somewhere that drags it toward the middle.

For building-targeting cards (Hog Rider, Giant, Balloon, Royal Giant), defensive buildings do this for you: placing Cannon, Tesla or Inferno Tower between your towers, near the middle, pulls the troop off its path and into range of both towers.

Kiting

Kiting means pulling an enemy troop toward a cheap card and walking it where you want it. For example, if your opponent's Mini P.E.K.K.A is coming and you place Skeletons in the opposite corner, Mini P.E.K.K.A turns toward them while your towers keep shooting it. Cheap single-unit cards (Ice Golem, Skeletons, Ice Spirit) are ideal for this.

Keep ranged cards back

Place ranged cards like Musketeer, Wizard and Executioner in front of your towers but away from the enemy troop. That way your tower and your ranged card shoot together while a melee troop has to reach your tank or tower first. Placing ranged cards at the bridge without a tank makes them easy targets.

Activate your King Tower

At the start of the match the King Tower is asleep and doesn't shoot. It wakes up in two ways: when a Princess Tower is destroyed, or when the King Tower itself takes damage. An awake King Tower helps your defense for the rest of the match and is a big advantage.

Ways to wake it on purpose: pull an enemy troop into its range with Tornado, drag a troop toward it with Fisherman, or pull a building-targeting card with a building placed near your King Tower. Remember your opponent will try to do the same, and be careful not to wake your opponent's King Tower by accident with your own spells (a Fireball on a troop next to their King Tower, for example).

Splash against swarms

Trying to stop Skeleton Army, Goblin Gang or Minion Horde with single-target cards costs you elixir. Use a splash troop (Valkyrie, Baby Dragon, Wizard) or a cheap spell (The Log, Zap, Arrows) instead. It's safer to place a splash troop where the swarm will walk into it than right in the middle of the swarm.

High damage against tanks

Against tanks like Golem, Giant and P.E.K.K.A, use cards with high single-target damage like Mini P.E.K.K.A, Inferno Tower or Inferno Dragon. Meeting the tank after it crosses the river, where your towers can also shoot it, is the most elixir-efficient option. Answer the support troops behind the tank with spells or splash, or your tank killer may die before it reaches the tank.

From defense to counterpush

The biggest reward of a good defense is the troops that survive it. If the Valkyrie or Mini P.E.K.K.A that stopped your opponent's push is still alive, add a card behind or next to it for a cheap counterpush. While your opponent spends elixir answering it, you keep your elixir lead. This is where elixir management and defense come together.
