Clash Royale looks simple at first: drop cards, destroy your opponent's towers. But after a few matches you realize winning is less about card strength and more about timing, elixir management and building the right deck. This guide sums up everything a new player should know in their first few weeks.
The goal of the game
Each player has a King Tower (the big tower in the middle) and two Princess Towers (the smaller side towers). The player who destroys more towers by the end of the match wins; destroying the King Tower wins the match instantly. If the tower count is tied when time runs out, the match goes to overtime.
You spend elixir to play cards. Elixir refills over time and caps at 10. Each card's elixir cost is shown in its top-left corner. So the real challenge isn't playing your strongest card; it's using your elixir more efficiently than your opponent.
Card types
Troops: cards that walk the arena and fight. Some target buildings only (Giant, Hog Rider, Golem); others attack the nearest enemy.
Spells: instant effects you can cast anywhere on the map (Fireball, Zap, The Log). They damage both troops and towers.
Buildings: structures you place on your side that expire after a while. Defensive buildings (Cannon, Tesla, Inferno Tower) pull enemy troops toward themselves.
Building your first deck
The most common beginner mistake is putting all the most expensive and "coolest" cards in one deck. For a balanced deck, watch for these:
Pick one win condition to damage towers (for example Giant or Hog Rider).
Carry two spells: one cheap (Zap, Arrows) and one stronger (Fireball).
Have at least three cards that can hit air (Musketeer, Archers, Minions, Baby Dragon).
Don't rush at the start. Play your first card when your elixir is nearly full, and don't launch a big attack before you've seen what your opponent plays.
Don't sit at 10 elixir. Elixir stops generating at 10; every wasted second is an advantage for your opponent.
Defend, then attack. Defending cheaply and counterattacking with your surviving troops is the most efficient way to play.
Track your opponent's deck. As the match goes on you learn which cards they play. Once you've seen all eight, you can work out which cards aren't in their hand.
Don't send lone cards for tower damage. A single troop is usually stopped cheaply and costs you elixir.
Don't waste spells. Fireball several troops, or a troop and the tower together, not a lone Archers.
Wait for double elixir. Elixir refills twice as fast in the last minute of the match; that's the best time for big pushes.
Stick with one deck. Instead of constantly switching, learn one deck; knowing when to play each card is the fastest way to improve.
Don't spread your resources. Spend gold and cards on the cards in your deck; upgrading cards you don't use is wasted.
Watch your losses. Use the replay feature to see where you lost elixir and which card gave you trouble.
Next steps
Once you know the basics, the biggest difference comes from elixir management. To decide which kind of deck you want to play, read the deck archetypes guide. When you're ready, enter your player tag in ElixirDeck to see the most balanced decks you can build with the cards you own.
